Punjab · Plucked string

Rabab

A family of lutes with deep roots across Central and South Asia. In Sikh memory, the rabab is inseparable from Bhai Mardana accompanying Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s singing.

Punjab · Bowed string

Taus

Named after the Persian word for peacock, its carved bird-shaped body gives the instrument its unmistakable silhouette and a deep, resonant voice.

Dilruba

A more compact member of the Taus family, combining a fretted neck, sympathetic strings, and a bowed melody line suited to vocal accompaniment and Kirtan.

Esraj

Emerging in the nineteenth century, the Esraj became an expressive companion to vocal music, especially in Bengal, with frets and sympathetic strings enriching every sustained note.

Tar
Shehnai

An early twentieth-century adaptation of the Esraj. A mechanical metal horn amplifies the bowed strings into a bright, penetrating tone reminiscent of the Shehnai.

Ustaad Gurmeet Singh
Sant Khalsa

Teacher, vocalist, and keeper of the Puratan Reet. Ustaad Ji founded Gurnaad Academy in 2006 to ensure that the Guru’s music remains accessible, practised, and alive.

His teaching connects vocal discipline with the spiritual and musical grammar of Gurbani Kirtan. Students learn not only compositions, but how rāga, pronunciation, breath, rhythm, and meaning work together.

Alongside voice and Harmonium, he teaches traditional instruments including Dilruba, Taus, Tar Shehnai, Rabab, and Esraj. Classes are offered in New Delhi and online for learners around the world.
